OpenAI has introduced its first hardware device, the Codex Micro. It is a customizable mechanical keyboard built in collaboration with Work Louder to keep users inside their Codex build.
The keyboard is designed to let users dictate instead of breaking their flow. By holding a key and speaking a prompt, users can avoid leaving the keyboard to type long instructions. Hardware keys also allow users to toggle how Codex thinks by summoning Skills, dropping into Plan mode, and adjusting reasoning effort up or down mid-build.
Dedicated keys enable users to jump between active Codex sessions without losing state so context stays put as they move. Permission prompts and alerts surface directly through the keyboard, letting developers approve decisions without leaving their IDE. Users can also queue follow-ups ahead of Codex finishing so they run automatically when ready. To demonstrate its capability, GPT-5.6 Sol built a working word game from end to end while the Micro handled every Codex control along the way.
