OpenAI has introduced its first hardware device, the Codex Micro. Built alongside Work Louder, this customizable mechanical keyboard is designed to keep users inside their Codex build without having to switch contexts or leave their development environment.
The keyboard allows developers to dictate prompts by holding a key and speaking, removing the need to type out long instructions. Hardware keys also let users toggle how Codex thinks, enabling them to summon skills, enter Plan mode, and adjust reasoning effort mid-build. Dedicated keys make it possible to swap between active Codex sessions without losing context.
Permission prompts and alerts surface directly through the keyboard, allowing developers to approve actions without leaving their IDE. Users can also queue follow-up prompts ahead of time so they run automatically when Codex is ready. To demonstrate its capabilities, GPT-5.6 Sol built a working word game from end to end while the Micro handled every control along the way.
