India backs 20 sovereign AI models under IndiaAI Mission
The government is supporting indigenous language models alongside significant compute infrastructure expansion.

India is taking a major step toward building sovereign technology with the backing of 20 indigenous AI foundation model proposals under the IndiaAI Mission. This initiative includes support for 12 large language models and 8 smaller language models tailored to the country's unique linguistic and cultural landscape.
To power these developments, the government has empanelled 15 compute providers, sanctioning a total of 93.18 lakh GPU hours to ensure developers have the necessary processing power.
Several homegrown startups are already leading the charge in developing these models. Sarvam AI is working on indigenous foundation models featuring 30 billion and 105 billion parameters. Gnani.AI is focusing on advanced speech-to-speech artificial intelligence technologies. BharatGen is building multilingual foundation models to serve diverse regional applications, while Avataar AI is developing innovative video generation models under the mission.
