India backs 20 sovereign AI models under IndiaAI Mission

The government is supporting indigenous language models and computing infrastructure to drive domestic development.

India is backing twenty sovereign AI foundation model proposals under the IndiaAI Mission. This initiative includes a push for twelve large language models and eight small language models to receive government support.

To power this technological growth, fifteen compute providers have been empanelled, with a total of 93.18 lakh GPU hours sanctioned so far. Several indigenous startups are already leading the development of these models across different domains.

Sarvam AI is developing 30 billion and 105 billion parameter indigenous foundation models, while Gnani.AI is working on advanced speech-to-speech AI model technologies. Additionally, BharatGen is building multilingual foundation models for diverse regional applications, and Avataar AI is developing innovative video generation models under the mission.
